Between laptops, iPads, and smartphones, we are connected 24/7. According to a recent study, people will take some sort of action on their phones – tapping, swiping, or clicking – an average of 2,617 times per day. And with the world in the palm of our hands, who can blame us? But the reality is that the more time we spend in front of our screens, the less quality time we’re spending with ourselves, our friends, and our families. So how can we set up clear boundaries with technology when our hands get ancy without a device?
Have a conversation with your family.
Have a frank discussion with your family about screen time. There are so many articles and studies about screen time’s effect on children, but when was the last time every member of your family stopped to think about how each of you can have a better relationship with technology? With everyone on the same page, you can hold each other accountable, making it much more realistic to follow through with your new boundaries.
Download a habit tracker.
We know what you’re thinking – isn’t this supposed to be about less screen time? But we suggest using technology to your advantage; work smarter, not harder! Don’t put the pressure on yourself to change your habits. Use a habit tracking app to help shift how you spend your time. Smallest goals are the easiest to stick to, and by breaking down a change in screen habits into baby steps, you’re setting yourself up for success.
Communicate, communicate, communicate!
Life can be so unpredictable. If, for whatever reason, you need to hop on your phone during a tech-free window of your day, take a moment to check with those around you. Most likely they won’t mind at all, but the courtesy of asking first will reinforce the idea that your priority is time with people over time with your phone.
Most importantly, test out multiple methods to find what works best for you. There is no need to put pressure on yourself to do “better”. You are exactly enough as you are.
