Make space to relax.
When life feels overwhelming, it’s more important than ever to make space for yourself. For some people that looks like yoga, for others journaling, and for others going on a walk. Find what works best for you, and incorporate these centering practices regularly to provide yourself with healthy coping mechanisms to prevent and address current anxiety.

Get enough rest.
For many people, when stress levels are high and schedules busy, sleep is one of the first things that’s sacrificed to ensure to-do lists are properly crossed off. However, a good night’s sleep should be a top priority for everyone. Studies have shown that consistently getting a good night’s sleep can strengthen memory and emotional health, increase your attention span, and encourage your creativity.

Practice breathing exercises.
The above tips will help prevent the onset of anxiety, but what happens when you’re in the midst of an anxiety attack? Breathing exercises can be helpful to refocus your attention and soothe anxieties. The next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, try this breathing technique:

Breathe in for four.
Hold your breath for seven.
Breathe out for eight.
Repeat.

This pattern of breathing triggers your body to send calming messages to your brain.

Talk to someone.
It can be difficult to take a step back from our own lives to determine what triggers anxiety. Talking to a friend, family member, or therapist is an important step in learning how to manage anxiety and move beyond it. There is no need to put this burden on yourself, as there so many people who are ready to be your support system and help you through challenges.
