Today we sat down with our stellar yoga instructor, Jackie Huitink. Jackie received her Yoga Teacher Training certification in Bali, Indonesia. Her unique training experience brings depth to her students and healing practice. Read on to learn more about her work!

Primrose Healing and Wellness: Hi Jackie! Tell us about your journey to becoming a yoga instructor.

Jackie Huitink: My journey to becoming a yoga instructor started 4 years when I saw a photo on Instagram of @yoga_girl doing a handstand on the beach and I thought, “I want to do handstands!” As I practiced and taught myself more and more about Yoga, beyond just the physical asanas or poses, I realized I have been doing Yoga my whole life. I continued my own self-study for over a year before I took a leave of absence from my job in science to travel to Bali and become a certified yoga instructor. PHW: How can yoga be a beneficial addition to a wellness routine?

JH: Incorporating yoga into your wellness routine can only have beneficial effects! Beyond the physical aspects of moving your body, the eight limbs of yoga provide us with a holistic practice that brings unity and balance to our lives in physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual ways. Yoga provides us a space to heal through moving meditation, bringing awareness to our bodies, our breath, and the present moment. Through the physical practice, we open and strengthen our bodies, through pranayama or breath work, we become present to what is now, and through our meditation, we find the strength within us to conquer our fears and change our lives in every way that we want.

PHW: What would you say to someone who has never done yoga but is interested in trying it?

JH: Yoga is for everyone! It doesn’t matter how flexible you are, if you know sanskrit, or can stand on your head. In yoga, we start exactly where you are and work from there. If you can close your eyes and breathe, you can do yoga!

PHW: What style of yoga do you specialize in? Can you tell us about it?

JH: I specialize in hatha yoga, vinyasa flow, and restorative yoga. Each of my classes begins with a guided breathing meditation and moves into slow, conscious movement. In hatha and vinyasa flow, each breath is linked to a movement creating a flowing sequence that both strengthens and relaxes the mind and body. Restorative yoga is my favorite type of yoga to teach because it’s truly all about relaxing! During a restorative yoga class, you are given the space to rest in fully supported postures for up to 20 minutes at time, leaving your body, mind, and soul at ease. I often include full body Reiki healing sessions during my restorative yoga sessions.

PWH: You focus on one-on-one classes at Primrose. What do those classes look like?

JH: Taking a private session with me is a fully customized experience. All of my classes start and end with a beautiful guided meditation and what’s in the middle depends on you. Do you feel like moving today? Let’s do some Vinyasa. Feeling a little worn down? Let’s stick with Restorative. Each of my private sessions also gives you the opportunity to experience the gentle and calming effect of hands on healing, or Reiki healing. Each session is catered to creating a safe, healing space for you to explore.

PHW: What’s your favorite thing about working at Primrose Healing and Wellness?

JH: My favorite thing about working at Primrose is the amazing team of healers that I get to work with. We are constantly teach each other more about healing and loving and I am filled with gratitude to be there.
